How Do I Keep My Windows Looking Great Year-Round?

Simple maintenance tips that protect performance and appearance

Proper window care helps extend lifespan, maintain efficiency, and keep your home comfortable year-round.

Inspect windows regularly

A few times per year, check for:

  • Cracks or chips in the glass

  • Peeling paint or finish wear

  • Broken hardware or locks

  • Signs of rot or moisture intrusion

Catching small issues early can prevent more expensive repairs later.

Watch for leaks and moisture

Look closely at frames, sashes, and seals for gaps or cracks that can allow water or air infiltration. Moisture buildup or condensation between panes may indicate seal failure and should be addressed promptly.

Clean windows at least twice per year

Glass: Use water with mild dish soap or a commercial glass cleaner. Avoid abrasive pads that can scratch glass. Finish with a microfiber cloth or squeegee for a streak-free shine.

Frames:

  • Wood: Clean gently with mild soap and avoid excess moisture. Refinish as needed.

  • Vinyl: Low maintenance — soap and water work well.

  • Aluminum: Use mild detergent or vinegar solution for stubborn grime.

Tracks: Vacuum loose debris, then scrub with soapy water to keep sliding windows and doors operating smoothly.

Check and reseal caulking

Caulking around windows and doors seals out air and moisture, but it breaks down over time.

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends resealing gaps to reduce drafts and energy loss:

  • Remove cracked or peeling caulk

  • Clean the surface thoroughly

  • Apply a continuous bead of new caulk and smooth evenly

Caulk types:

  • Silicone: best for glass and metal

  • Acrylic latex: interior use, paintable

  • Polyurethane: durable exterior applications

Maintain weatherstripping and hardware

  • Replace worn weatherstripping to prevent drafts

  • Lubricate hinges, tracks, and locks

Recommended lubricants:

  • Silicone spray (tracks and hinges)

  • Lithium grease (heavy-duty hinges)

  • Graphite powder (locks)

When maintenance isn’t enough

If windows remain drafty, fogged, or are difficult to operate despite regular maintenance, replacement may be the best long-term solution.
